IT WAS a new start for schoolchildren last week when they celebrated Chinese New Year.

Pupils at Boxgrove Primary School put their aprons on and prepared a stunning banquet which was the culmination of a week of activities focused on China and its culture.

The youngsters had fun doing some Chinese dancing and also spent time cleaning and sweeping the school to symbolise the Chinese tradition of sweeping away the previous year’s bad luck. Pupils also got creative and decorated the school with traditional Chinese dragons and lanterns and the colours red and gold.

Assistant head Teresa Smyth said: “For the banquet they really thought about what they wanted the experience to be like and they worked so well together. It was heartwarming to see Reception children stood next to Year 6 children chopping vegetables.”
