WEST Sussex County Council’s Operation Watershed is focusing its attention on Fishbourne this week.

Work has started to make improvements to the drainage systems at Fishbourne Road East.

Two culverts which have become blocked with flood debris are being cleared out.

Structural damage to both culverts will be repaired and a ‘silt sump’ installed.

Excavations will be made to increase the capacity of existing gulleys, and some minor re-shaping of the road surface will be done to aid the flow of surface water into roadside gulleys.

The works will cost about £40,000 and is expected to be finished in mid-June.

County council member for highways and transport, Pieter Montyn, said: “This area of Fishbourne suffered during the floods last June, so once this solution was identified through Operation Watershed we were keen to press on and get started.

“We hope any disruption is minimised while work is carried out and ask residents to bear with us until it is over.”

Operation Watershed is the council’s £8.25m initiative to help communities prepare themselves against extreme weather.
