Akinde Pompey future in doubt

Pompey are yet to approach John Akinde over a return to Fratton Park.

Any potential move for the striker has been put firmly on the backburner as Blues boss Guy Whittingham explores his options.

The majority of this season’s squad have already held talks on permanent deals.

However, Whittingham has revealed discussions have still to take place with Akinde and his representatives.

Negotiations are still on-going with David Connolly, who the club are eager to bring back to the south coast.

In addition, released Oxford forward Tom Craddock has attracted strong interest and is a player the Pompey boss is known to admire.

It leaves Ashley Harris and Patrick Agyemang as the only strikers currently in a squad which continues to be rebuilt.

But it appears Akinde’s hopes of being at Fratton Park next season are looking increasingly slim.

Whittingham said: ‘John’s left, we need to discuss what happens next.

‘I said I would get in touch with the agent and let him know where we are. That hasn’t happened yet.

‘John’s a bit unfortunate because Pat (Agyemang) came in and did so well. John didn’t get really a chance.

‘Whenever he was put on he hadn’t been playing much football.

‘He’s a great kid with good morals, a great work ethic and one of the ones you wouldn’t have to tell to go out and do some running after the game because he would be out already there doing it.

‘He’s a good lad and if we don’t take him on I am sure he will find a club somewhere.’

Akinde made 11 appearances for the Blues after arriving in January, although just three of them were starts.

He started the campaign with Crawley, but played just 11 times – all as a substitute – before being released at the turn of the year.

Although Akinde largely struggled to impress Pompey fans, Whittingham has been consistent in his belief he has seen enough of him in action to make a judgement call.

However, it is unlikely Blues supporters will be seeing him come back.
