Toddy move must wait on budget

The prospect of Svetoslav Todorov returning to Pompey will hinge on the size of the club’s playing budget for next season.

The popular Bulgarian striker revealed during the week that he has been in discussions with caretaker Blues boss Guy Whittingham and new chairman Iain McInnes about coming back to Fratton Park next term.

But with the Blues finally out of administration only last night, a playing budget has not yet been agreed for the 2013-14 campaign.

And Whittingham – who cannot be confirmed as manager for next term until that happens – hinted any rebuilding plans are still on ice for now.

Asked about the possibility of Todorov rejoining, Whittingham said: ‘I don’t know. There are a lot of things to take into consideration.

‘If we are given the opportunity to get players in for next season, then we have to make sure that we get the right group for whatever is expected of us.’

Now the Pompey Supporters’ Trust have completed their takeover, keeping a tight rein on player wages is absolutely imperative.

But Whittingham insists his existing players have remained patient as they await contract offers and is also hoping for some clarity in the next few days.

And that includes informing young players if they have a future at Fratton Park.

He said: ‘Nobody has come to me about contracts yet and nobody has been informed that they will not be staying for next season.

‘We will start having those discussions.

‘But this is where we need to know about finances and things like that.

‘Is there room for a big development squad or do we have to be more critical on which ones we do keep?’
