A CHICHESTER park is now home to one of only 60 trees commemorating the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee.

The unique Jubilee Diamond Tree was planted during a special event in Florence Park on Tuesday (April 16). The Friends of Florence Park were joined by residents and Portfield Primary Academy pupils for the planting.

Geoff King, chairman of the tree wardens group and a founding member of the Friends of Florence Park, said: “I am over the moon. It has been a great pleasure and really special. It is about bringing people out into the community to remember 60 years ago.”

Pupils showcased a host of work based on the Queen’s coronation and residents enjoyed tea and biscuits served in gazebos containing colourful displays.

Pupils were joined with older residents from sheltered homes to enjoy the tree-planting and reminisce about the coronation.

“I thought it is Florence Park’s turn. We are losing so many of our city’s trees. This is important, the more trees we can get in the better,” said Mr King.

The tree was donated by the Tree Council after a bid by Mr King, who is also the Chichester Tree Warden. A record of the event will also form part of the 60 events compilation presented to Her Majesty.

The tree-planting is a joint project between Mr King and Chichester District Council.
