Friday Benevolent League

The divisional pairs knockouts took place at the Newtown Social Club.

A massive turnout of 104 players from three divisions turned up to take part, beating the previous record of last year by eight.

Some 18 pairs took to the oche for the Division 3 knockout. The first semi-final saw Richard Pennells and Mick Isles (Aldwick Barn) take on Maureen Dempsey and Tracey Reeves (Richmond Royals).

Despite hitting many treble 16s, the Richmond Royals pair didn’t have enough to stop Pennells and Isles.

The second semi-final was between John Abbott and Steve Taylor (BRSA B) and Ashley Clements and Lee Clark (Aldwick Barn).

Abbott & Taylor pushed their opponents hard, but Clements and Clark pushed back to make it an all-Aldwick

Barn final.

A tough battle between team-mates Pennells and Isles and Clements and Clark saw the latter pair - captain and newcomer - claim the final double and the title of champions.

In division two, 17 pairs were throwing for their chances. The first semi-final saw a Chi Snooker Club battle with Adi Linfield and George Knight (Chi Snooker C) taking on Peter Hall and Rob Rice (Chi Snooker A).

Hot on the heels from last week’s captains’ knockout, Linfield and his partner pushed their opponents aside.

The second semi-final saw Tom Spencer and Keith Robinson (Chi Snooker C) up against Dean Cooper and Keelan Belcher (Newtown SC A). Spencer and Robinson made it the second team final of the night.

In the final, Linfield and Knight got off to a good start with a 15-dart leg, but started slowly in the second.

A score of 130 from Knight put them in front and a miss for 96 from their opponents gave Linfield the darts at double eight, which he took to confirm Linfield and Knight as division-two pairs champions.

Another 17 pairs took part in the division-one knockout. The first semi-final saw Gary Blackwood and Matt Spindler (Claremont Cobras) take on Chris Gatford & Andy Stubbs (Chi Snooker B). Even though they were starting slow in every game, the Claremont duo made their way past the Chichester pair.

The second semi-final saw Sam Abrehart & Dave Owens (POW Z) versus Chris Osborne & Nikki Pitman (Chi Snooker B).

With Abrehart and Owens getting better by the game it was only a matter of time.

In the division-one final, Blackwood and Spindler came up against Abrehart and Owens. The first leg looked good for the Claremont duo, but a missed double gave Abrehart and Owens a chance which they took.

The second leg saw Owens score a maximum 180 and another ton to give them a massive lead. A few shots later and the win was theirs.
