CHEESE, milk, gloves and £200,000 worth of jewellery are among the items stolen in a string of burglaries and thefts across the district.
Several properties in Chichester have been broken into over the last two weeks, as well as several thefts from cars and doorsteps.
A property in Chichester’s Croft Mead was burgled overnight on January 27, and money taken.
In Chatsworth Road, there was an attempted burglary overnight on January 26. The front door was damaged, but no entry was gained.
In East Street a shop was entered and cash was stolen between the afternoon of January 26, and the next morning.
In College Lane an office was broken into and a computer, bag and tools were stolen, some time between January 25 and 28.
Another attempted burglary occurred on Caernarvon Road at 7am on January 31. An attempt was made to break into a property but nothing was stolen.
And it isn’t just the city that is bearing the brunt of this crime.
Overnight on January 24, a barn in Binderton was broken into and £1,000 worth of tools were stolen. Padlocks were cut and metal shutters were smashed to gain entry to the building.
In Lavant, a locked communal area in Bleaches Court was entered in the early hours of January 30. Stolen items include a crash helmet, black gloves, boots and blue Timberland coat.
Thousands of pounds worth of tools were stolen from a site in Halnaker overnight on January 30.
A home on The Drive, Emsworth, was burgled between 4pm and 9.55pm on January 26. A computer, jewellery and various items were stolen, and the whole house had been searched.
In Bosham, a boat and trailer were stolen from Old Park Lane. The incident occurred overnight on January 26.
A property on Selsey’s High Street was targeted, but burglars failed to gain access. This incident was overnight on January 27.
There were several burglaries in the Midhurst area too – in Haslemere and Fernhurst.
Tools, machinery and fuel were taken in the raids.
As reported on page nine, a jewellers’ shop in North Street, Chichester, was also burgled, and jewellery to the retail value of £200,000 was taken in the raid.
In an unusual theft, cheese and milk were stolen from the doorstep of a property in Grosvenor Road, Stockbridge, on January 28.
Cars targeted
Several vehicles have had items stolen from them, and Sussex Police’s Inspector Will Rolls took to social networking site Twitter, and said: “Offences continue to occur on Chichester District with people leaving valuables on display in vehicles and then leaving them insecure.”
Chief inspector Tanya Jones, Chichester district commander, said: “Many offenders who break into cars, homes and garages are opportunist thieves, who simply try doors to see if they are open. I would urge owners to make every effort to deter them by securing their doors and windows.
“By working together we can reduce burglaries and thefts, the upset and the great inconvenience they cause.
“So a plea from Sussex Police, please think twice and check before you leave your house or car to make sure it is locked, and please remove valuables from cars before you park it at a sporting event or take the dog for a walk. It is such an easy thing to do, and together we can make it harder for offenders to commit crime.”
