Decision on free parking in Selsey and East Wittering

FREE parking for an hour will be retained in two coastal car parks in Selsey and East Wittering but others are still facing rises.

Chichester District Council originally planned to remove free parking in both areas entirely but changed the proposals after concerns from residents and businesses.

The free one hour period will apply in the car parks in East Street, Selsey, and Northern Crescent, East Wittering.

Myles Cullen, cabinet member for economy, tourism and car parks, said: “We have taken on-board residents’ views and considered the impact on local businesses when coming to this decision to retain the initial one-hour free period.”

There will, however, be an increase in the charges from April 1 for people staying longer than one hour to cover rising costs.

Someone staying for three hours in Selsey’s East Street car park has gone up 10p from 20p to 30p and staying for the whole day has gone up by 10p from £1.20 to £1.30.

Cllr Cullen said: “We know ‘one size does not fit all’ and so this is why we took a little longer before we agreed our new charges for the coastal car parks.

“Our car parks remain some of the cheapest on the south coast even with these modest increases after the initial free period.”

There will also be increases to the seasonal charges at East Beach and Selsey Marine car parks, Selsey, and at Marine Drive and Bracklesham Lane car parks in East Wittering and Bracklesham Bay.

Changes were agreed to Bosham car park and to Chichester city centre car parks at a meeting of the council’s cabinet on January 8.

The council has also introduced a flexible monthly permit in Bosham that will make it easier for seasonal boat users to park in the car park rather than in nearby residential areas.
