A SELF-branded ‘fat man’ is to climb Mount Kilimanjaro to raise money for charity.
Usually at his desk dealing with the local tourism and economic development issues at Chichester District Council, Kenrick Garraway has decided to climb the famous landmark in October for children’s charity Compassion UK.
The 51-year-old has named his challenge the ‘Fat Man’s Journey up a Hill’.
“I think it will make people laugh and keep it interesting,” he said. “Hopefully people who want to lose weight and are in sedentary jobs will maybe think they too can also do something like this to help.”
Kenrick is hoping to raise £10,000 for Compassion, an international Christian child development and child advocacy ministry. It partners with local churches to help children in extreme poverty in 26 countries.
Kenrick added: “The money will be used to sponsor two children to help them and their families.
“I have four children and they are all getting to the stage of leaving home. Now I have got the chance to say ‘right, what am I going to do with my life?’
“I have got quite a lot of time and I love walking. Because I don’t get to do it that much I need to lose weight.”
Kenrick has started his gym sessions at Westgate Leisure Centre to lose a whopping three stone for the climb on October 1.
