A THIRD pedestrian has died crossing the A27 in Chichester after being hit by a car on Friday, January 20.

The man was crossing the A27 between the Stockbridge Roundabout and Whyke Roundabout when he was hit by a Ford car at 5.33pm.

Police are trying to identify him and contact his family, and they are appealing for witnesses to come forward by calling Sussex Police on 101 and to quoting Operation Anagram.

In December two men died within three days of eachother crossing exactly the same area of the dual carriageway.

Sigitas Juozapaitis, 54, died on 2 December, and three days later, Kenneth Sherwood, 39, was killed. Both were well known at the St Joseph’s Nightshelter in Hunston, which is south of the A27.

After their deaths, the charity Stonepillow which runs the shelter and has called for action to make it safer for their clients to get across the A27.

The Highways Agency had plans in the pipeline to build a bridge across the road, but they were axed by funding cuts from the government.

Police also made efforts to raise awareness of the problem by issuing clients of the shelter with high vis tabards so they would be more visible to motorists.
