Sussex County Cricket Club are mourning the death of of two legends of the game who had strong links to the county.
Ex-England skipper Tony Greig died last week in Sydney. He was 66.
And on New Year’s Day one of the all-time great cricket broadcasters and journalists, Christopher Martin-Jenkins, died of cancer, aged 67.
Greig played for Sussex between 1966 and 1978 and scored 156 on his debut against Lancashire.
He scored 3,599 Test runs at an average of 40.43 and claimed 141 wickets at an average of 32.20.
Greig, a right-handed middle-order batsman and medium-fast seamer, commentated on cricket for Channel Nine for 33 years.
Sussex chairman Jim May said, “As a player and a captain, Tony had a massive impact on Sussex.”
All at Sussex were deeply saddened by the death of Martin-Jenkins, respected throughout cricket because of a love for the game which shone through in his commentating and writing.
He was a big supporter of Sussex cricket and was rightly proud of the achievements of son Robin and his role in taking the county championship trophy to Hove for the first time in 2003.
