COUNCILLORS are being asked to approve the expansion of a project to support troubled families in the Chichester district.

Members of Chichester District Council’s cabinet will discuss the Think Family expansion project at a meeting on Tuesday (January 8).

West Sussex County Council has said it will support the government-driven Troubled Families initiative, set up in the wake of last year’s riots, by expanding its existing Think Family work. It is seeking the support of district councils to deliver the project.

Members are being asked to support the project in principle and focus the work in the council’s ‘targeted communities’ – Chichester East, Chichester South, Selsey North and Tangmere.

In his report to members, Steve Hansford, assistant director of communities, said: “If the council agrees to support the project, our focus will be to promote long-term change within the family in order to prevent homelessness, promote back-to-work initiatives, reduce benefit dependency and to reduce anti-social behaviour.”

He added the council would hope to see a reduction in the number of families meeting the Troubled Families criteria. The cabinet meeting will be held from 9.30am on Tuesday at East Pallant House, Chichester.
