Guy Whittingham is weighing up whether to unleash Jake Jervis on his old club Tranmere tomorrow.

The Blues travel to the League One leaders, with the striker pushing for a start against the side he spent a period on loan at.

Jervis played five games and grabbed one goal before leaving Prenton Park last month.

Caretaker boss Whittingham has been impressed with what he’s seen from the 21-year-old since his arrival from Birmingham. Now he is chewing over whether to throw him in for his first Pompey start.

Whittingham said: ‘Jake knows them and they know him, so he’s in my thoughts.

‘I haven’t made a decision either way yet but it’s something to think about. He’s a really good kid. He knows he has a lot to learn and going out on loan at clubs is a way of learning.

‘He wants to work hard on his weaknesses and has a great attitude.

‘When people talk about strikers, they talk about movement. That’s a side of the game he can improve on.

‘But he certainly knows where the back of the net is.

‘He wants to stay behind and work on stuff every day – and we want to pass on that information.’

After playing and scoring goals on loan at League One sides, Whittingham is pleased with the competition Jervis adds to Pompey’s options.

He said: ‘With Jake coming in, people can see he’s played games in League One so he brings competition for places.

‘We haven’t had that and can now look on the bench and see changes.’
