PUPILS at Compton and Up Marden CE School put their best foot forward recently on their Great African Welly Walk.
The school raised £176 for the Farm Africa project which helps to target hunger in Africa.
Children and staff warmed up with a dance routine on the playground based on These Boots are Made for Walking, led by mum Stacey Merritt, before setting off through the autumn sunshine on paths along the South Downs.
Max, ten, from Up Marden, said: “It made me think about people who aren’t as lucky as us and I really hope that we raised enough money to help lots of people in Africa”.
Alice, ten, from Emsworth, added: “It made a great difference to me because we have lots of lovely forests with wildlife. I am very proud because we filled a pair of size 11 boots with money.”
The routes had been carefully researched by teaching staff, a fact that did not go unnoticed by Zane, aged five, from Rowlands Castle: “The walk surprised me because we walked all the way back to school!”
The £176 raised is sufficient to buy a camel for a family in Ethiopia or to provide a drip irrigation system to keep crops watered.
