A ROAD accident in which a man had to be airlifted to Southampton hospital on Friday has prompted a fresh wave of anxiety about the speed limits around Chichester roads.
A lorry and a car collided on the Salthill Road/B2178 junction in the morning of Friday, September 14. The area is known to be an accident blackspot.
A spokesman for West Sussex County Council said: “We have listened to residents’ concerns and have diverted money from this year’s budget to invest into making this junction safer.
“Work on making improvements has already taken place.
“We resurfaced this stretch of road last year, which enabled us to install fresh red anti-skid surfacing at the Salthill Road/B2178 junction in April 2012.
“The red coloured material highlights the potential hazard of the junction to road users from both directions, while the high-friction surfacing has improved the skid resistance of the road.
“In addition, we have held positive talks with two landowners about improving the visibility of the road by cutting back vegetation on their land to make the road appear wider.
“We have also met with BT to discuss repositioning its telegraph pole opposite the junction.
“We are very grateful to both these landowners who have offered to help and support us with this.”
